·       Asthma Studies

·     MIA  - Enrolling  Is asthma caused by a bacterial infection?  New discoveries have led to an interesting theory a chronic bacterial infection may be associated with asthma or poor asthma control. TV ad for the study.  Consent Form  Picture of the Bacteria

·     BASALT - Enrolling  The University of California, San Diego, Airway Reseach Center and the Asthma Clinical Research Network (ACRN) are conducting a research study looking for the best strategy for adjusting asthma medications.   Study discription   Consent Form

        Additional Information

·     TALC - Enrolling  The name - Tiotropium Bromide as an Alternative to Increased Inhaled Corticosteroid in Patients Inadequately Controlled on a Lower Dose of Inhaled Corticosteroids
TALC and BASALT Trials: The TALC and BASALT (Best Adjustment Strategy for Asthma over Long Term) trials are complementary studies that share a common 4-week run-in period. Asthmatics who are controlled on low-dose inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) during the common run-in are enrolled in BASALT; patients who are sub-optimally controlled on low-dose ICS and, therefore, require additional treatment to gain asthma control are enrolled in TALC.
Why this study? National and international asthma treatment guidelines recommend ICS as the initial controller therapy for all severities of asthma that warrant daily treatment with a controller. When treatment with low-moderate doses of ICS is not sufficient to gain and maintain asthma control, guidelines suggest adding a second controller, rather than escalating the ICS dose to high levels.

·     SARA -  Closed to Enrollment People with asthma have an increased frequency of silent Acid Reflux (GERD).  GERD can be silent (present without symptoms of heartburn) and can make asthma worse.  We do not know if treating people with asthma for silent GERD will help their asthma control.  Consent Form

·     SARCA -  Enrolling  THE STUDY OF ACID REFLUX IN CHILDREN WITH ASTHMA.    The purpose of this study is to determine  if adding a drug (called a proton pump inhibitor) that  decreases the amount of stomach acid will help children with asthma Parental Consent Form  Adolescent Assent Form

·     MK- 0633-007  -  Enrolling This study is to compare MK-0633 with placebo to see if there is an improvement in lung function over the last 4 weeks of the 6-week active treatment period in patients aged 18 to 65 years with chronic asthma.   Consent Form

·     Asthma in the African American population  -  Enrolling  The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness and safety of SYMBICORT® pMDI [a medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration, (FDA)] in the African American population.  SYMBICORT® pMDI (pressurized metered dose inhaler) combines two drugs, budesonide and formoterol.  Budesonide is an inhaled steroid.  It is used in the treatment of asthma and provides overall control of the disease in the African American population.

·     TESRA  -Completed   A double-blind, placebo-controlled efficacy (as assessed by post-bronchodilator FEV1) and safety study of 5 mg RO3300074 once-daily for 2 years in subjects with smoking related, moderate-to-severe COPD with emphysema receiving concurrent optimal COPD drug therapy.   Description of the Study                                                        Link to Clinical_Trial.GOV description of the study.

·     Chiesi  -  Completed CHF 4226:  A randomized, controlled, 14-treatment day, multicenter study to determine the optimal efficacious and safe dose of CHF 4226 in a metered dose inhaler in treating patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.   Description of the Study

·     FORTE - Completed   Joe W. Ramsdell, M.D., Andrew Ries, M.D. and colleagues are conducting a research study called FORTE sponsored by the National Institutes of Health to see whether people with emphysema may benefit from treatment with retinoic acid drugs, derivatives of Vitamin A.   FORTE will test drugs for safety and effectiveness, and perform procedures to detect whether retinoic acids are beneficial in emphysema.
